Adjustable colours and ranges in heatmap

New heatmap settings

Always wanted to change the colour scheme of the heatmap? Or do you need different colors to emphasize the importance of locations or negative values?

Heatmaps are widely used to analyse and visualise density and intensity of data. E-Maps supports both heatmaps based on density and heatmaps based on a value of the data. Adjust the colours, the ranges and display negative values.

E-Maps has baisc heatmap functionality in all versions. E-Maps Pro has the additional value based heatmaps. Discover the new specifications for heatmaps in Excel E-Maps.

Use a Shapefile in E-Maps

SHP (Shapefile) is a vector file format associated with a geographic information system (GIS) software program. The SHP format was developed by Esri (Environmental Systems Research Institute) with the aim of increasing interoperability with other GIS software programs. SHP files with polygons (area’s) can be used to create thematic maps in Excel E-Maps.

See the tutorial how to import the map and create thematic shading (choropleth).

What is Mappoint? MapPoint vs E-Maps

Since 2000 organisations used Microsoft Mappoint for quick geographic insights. Mappoint had background maps for large parts of the world. And Mappoint had geocoding capabilities. Mappoint had to be installed on a (network) harddrive.

Quick geographic visualisations and analyses of your own acces or Excel data could be made and even routing in several countries. At the end of 2014, Microsoft stopped developing MapPoint.

With the Excel add-in E-Maps, we have the successor of Mappoint. With advanced geocoding, maps in the cloud and always up-to-date, and nice analyses features like heatmap, choroplets and other thematic mapping. Even isochrones and routing are available.

Bar charts

Excel E-maps has a new bar chart or column bar graph function. The bar chart has vertical rectangular bars with lengths proportional to the values that they represent.

The size, color and transparancy can be adjusted.

Dutch hospital top 100

AD ziekenhuis top 100

The Netherlands

Dutch newspaper ‘Algemeen Dagblad’ has publicised her annual hospital test.

You will find the results plotted on a map where you can find this years’ score in the outer circle and the results of 2013 in the inner.

Explanation of the used colors: The redder, the worse, the greener the better the score.

In E-Maps we used two thematic maps with different diameter on top of each other.

Check the results of the scan in the AD newspaper.
